💼 Career Tip of the Week
Harness the Power of Informational Interviews
Job hunting isn’t just about applying to open positions, it’s about building connections and gathering insights. Informational interviews are a secret weapon to gain insider knowledge, expand your network, and potentially uncover hidden job opportunities.
Here’s how to conduct an effective informational interview:
What is an Informational Interview?
It’s a casual conversation where you learn about someone’s role, industry, or company—without directly asking for a job. Think of it as scouting a new game before diving in.
Step 1: Find the Right People
Target individuals in roles, industries, or companies you admire.
- Where to Look:
- LinkedIn (search by job titles or companies).
- Alumni networks or professional associations.
- Personal connections or referrals.
Step 2: Reach Out Politely
Send a concise, personalized message to request their time.
- Sample Message:
- “Hi [Name], I admire your work at [Company] and am interested in learning more about [specific role/industry]. Would you be open to a 15-20 minute chat? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might have for someone exploring this field.”
Step 3: Prepare Thoughtful Questions
Show genuine interest and respect their time by asking meaningful questions.
- Examples:
- What does a typical day in your role look like?
- What skills or experiences have been most valuable in your career?
- What challenges do you see in the [specific industry] right now?
- Are there any resources (books, courses, communities) you’d recommend for someone interested in this field?
Step 4: Build a Connection During the Conversation
- Be Curious: Let the conversation flow naturally but stay focused on their expertise.
- Share a Little About Yourself: Briefly mention your background and career goals if asked.
- Respect Their Time: Stick to the agreed duration unless they offer to extend.
Step 5: Follow Up and Stay in Touch
- Send a Thank-You Note:
- “Thank you so much for sharing your insights about [topic]. I especially appreciated your advice about [specific advice]. I’ll be sure to follow up on your suggestion to [actionable advice].”
- Maintain the Connection: Engage with their LinkedIn posts, update them on your progress, or check in occasionally with a thoughtful note.
📊 Pro Tips for Informational Interviews
- Be Respectful, Not Pushy: Don’t ask for a job outright; focus on learning and building rapport.
- Take Notes: Document key takeaways to guide your job search.
- Leverage Insights: Use what you learn to tailor your applications or expand your skill set.
Informational interviews aren’t just about gathering information, they’re about leveling up your professional network and uncovering hidden opportunities.
The relationships you build now could turn into powerful allies in your job hunt later or even a job.

What’s new with Dellyn Digital📝🎮?
I hope you’ve had an amazing December, whether you celebrated Christmas, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoyed the season in your own way.
As the year wraps up, I hope it’s been a good month for you.
2024 is coming to a close, and like many of you, I’m looking ahead to 2025 with hope and determination.
Let’s be real, it’s been a tough year for a lot of people. Layoffs have hit hard across industries. Just the other day, I heard about Party City facing closures.
These are strange and challenging times, which makes it more important than ever to focus on:
- Updating your resume.
- Building your personal brand.
- Mastering interview skills.
- Staying ahead of AI trends impacting your industry.
The job market has changed drastically, it’s not 2018, or even 2020 anymore.
Adaptation is key, keep that in mind for the 2025.
On a personal note, I’ve been doing well.
I’m still creating content on LinkedIn and YouTube, which has been a joy during my own job hunt. I got an interview lined up before the new year over.
Sharing tips and tricks to help you level up in your career fills my cup, it’s something I truly love doing and i will keep doing it.
