Avoid Wasting Time on Ghost Jobs
“Ghost jobs” are postings for positions that companies aren’t actively looking to fill. They may exist to collect resumes, fulfill internal policies, or test the job market. As a job seeker, chasing ghost jobs can be a frustrating waste of time. Here’s how to identify and avoid them:
What Are Ghost Jobs?
- Inactive Listings: Jobs posted weeks or months ago that remain open despite no intent to hire.
- Future Planning: Roles posted “just in case” funding or needs arise later.
- Resume Collection: Companies gathering a talent pool for undefined positions.
How to Spot a Ghost Job
- No Updates or Deadlines:
- The posting lacks a clear application deadline or hasn’t been updated in weeks.
- Recycled Listings:
- You notice the same job posted multiple times by the same company.
- Vague Job Descriptions:
- Details are sparse or generic, with unclear responsibilities or requirements.
- Unrealistic Expectations:
- The role demands an extensive mix of skills and experience, suggesting the company isn’t serious about hiring.
- No Contact Information:
- There’s no recruiter or hiring manager listed to follow up with questions.
How to Avoid Ghost Jobs
- Focus on Active Postings:
- Look for recent job postings (within the last 1-2 weeks).
- Check the company’s career page for updates or similar listings.
- Research the Company:
- Use LinkedIn to see if the company has recent hires in similar roles.
- Review employee reviews on Glassdoor or Indeed for hiring trends.
- Reach Out Before Applying:
- If possible, contact a recruiter or hiring manager to confirm the job’s status. A simple message like, “Hi, I came across this job posting and want to confirm if it’s still actively hiring” can save you time.
- Set Job Alerts Strategically:
- Use job boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor to filter and receive notifications for new postings.
- Track Your Applications:
- Maintain a spreadsheet or use job search tools to monitor responses and avoid spending time on unresponsive listings.
đź“Š Pro Tips for Dealing with Ghost Jobs
- Apply Early: Many ghost jobs stay up because they weren’t closed after the first wave of applications. Submitting early might increase your chances.
- Prioritize Quality over Quantity: Spend time applying to positions that align with your skills and research rather than sending mass applications.
- Focus on Networking: Many hidden opportunities arise through connections rather than job boards.
Ghost jobs are an unfortunate part of the job hunt but being vigilant and strategic can save you time and energy. By focusing on real opportunities, you can avoid dead ends and keep your job search efficient.

What’s new with Dellyn Digital📝🎮?
As the first month of 2025 comes to an end, how do you perceive the job market?
Headlines often highlight challenges such as ABC company laying off 10% of its workforce or XYZ closing down. The economy is currently facing difficulties, but there are positive developments as well. I have witnessed individuals who engage with my calls or video content successfully applying the tips, tricks, and mindset shifts provided, leading them to secure employment.
It brings me great joy to see others succeed in their careers.
Since I began posting seriously on LinkedIn in May 2024, I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with others and adding value through the skills I have developed in my career. Moving forward, it is important to understand how to create more engaging and effective posts and content. Learning how to market your skills beyond merely submitting a resume is crucial in 2025, especially considering the number of people actively seeking employment.
With that I am pleased to announce that I will be conducting a LinkedIn and Facebook live session with Dan Jones (Jonesy, T-bone) at Conversion Chemistry this Friday, January 31st. During this session, we will discuss:
· Content Strategy Insights
· Video and Written Content Mastery
· Engagement Techniques with a Gaming Twist
· Scalable Growth Processes
AI has made many tools more accessible for people, but it is important not to rely solely on automated responses from Chat GPT. It is critical to use appropriate prompts and infuse your own personality into your messages and content.
Remember, AI is a tool, and you are the one who adds the soul to your message.
I hope to see you at the live session this Friday.
I posted a poll on LinkedIn last Sunday:
With the Switch 2 being able to play switch games I was thinking this is a no brainer, so I made a poll on LinkedIn and to my surprise a lot of people said not to this idea. On one hand I can play more games on my Xbox once I get Game Pass but on the other hand Mario Kart 9 will be coming and I want to challenge my network to some games live.
I might just keep the Xbox and sell the Switch (Link version), Idk we will see.
