💡 Job hunting Tip of the week 💡
🚩 Job Description Red Flags – Spot the Traps Before You Apply!
Not all job listings are created equal. Some are like hidden mimics in Dark Souls, they look like treasure but turn into a nightmare once you engage. Before you hit “Apply,” watch out for these red flags in job descriptions:
1. “Fast-Paced Work Environment” – Translation: We’re Overworked
⚠️ If a company constantly emphasizes a fast-paced or high-pressure setting, it may mean:
❌ Unrealistic workloads.
❌ No work-life balance.
❌ Constant crunch with little support.
🛡️ Cheat Code: Look for roles that highlight collaboration, career growth, and a healthy work culture instead.
2. “Must Wear Many Hats” – Translation: One Job, Three Salaries
⚠️ If a listing suggests you’ll do multiple unrelated jobs, you might be:
❌ Taking on extra responsibilities without extra pay.
❌ Filling in for missing team members permanently.
❌ Spinning too many plates with no clear role.
🛡️ Cheat Code: Make sure the job duties match one role, not three. If expectations seem vague, ask for clarity before applying.
3. “We’re Like a Family” – Translation: No Boundaries
⚠️ When companies push the "we're a family" narrative, it could mean:
❌ Guilt-tripping employees into working overtime.
❌ Expecting personal loyalty over professional boundaries.
❌ A toxic workplace where burnout is normalized.
🛡️ Cheat Code: A great company respects work-life balance and doesn’t blur professional boundaries with personal expectations.
4. “Competitive Salary” – Translation: We’re Not Paying Enough
⚠️ If a company won’t list a salary range, be cautious:
❌ It could mean they lowball offers.
❌ They might expect you to negotiate without a starting point.
❌ The pay might be below industry standards.
🛡️ Cheat Code: If there’s no salary listed, use sites like Glassdoor or Levels.fyi to research fair pay before applying.
5. “Must Have 5+ Years Experience for an Entry-Level Role”
⚠️ Some job posts ask for:
❌ Unrealistic experience levels for junior roles.
❌ High-level skills without matching compensation.
❌ A unicorn candidate that doesn’t exist.
🛡️ Cheat Code: If you meet 75-80% of the listed requirements, apply anyway—companies sometimes set the bar unrealistically high but will hire the best available candidate.
📊 Final Boss Fight: The Interview
If you land an interview, ask direct questions:
What does a typical day look like in this role?
How does the company handle workload and overtime?
What’s the company culture like in practice, beyond the job description?
